Lesson Intro: Use the Correct Verb with Compound Subjects
Sometimes a sentence has more than one subject. This is called a compound subject. A compound subject happens when two or more nouns or pronouns are joined by words like and or or. To make the sentence correct, we must choose the verb that matches the compound subject. In this lesson, we will learn how to use the correct verb when the subject is made up of two or more parts. This will help us write sentences that are clear, correct, and easy to understand.
Here is a simple example:
John and Mark are friends.
My mom and dad work hard.
If the subjects are joined by and, we usually use a plural verb.
The teacher or the students are bringing the books.
The cat or the dog is making the noise.
If the subjects are joined by or or nor, the verb usually agrees with the subject closest to it.
