Math Introduction: Multi-Step Word Problems—Identify Reasonable Answers
Hi Sylver! Before choosing an answer, ask yourself: “Does this make sense?” A reasonable answer is close to what you would expect based on the numbers in the problem. You can estimate to check it.
Example:
You have $100. You buy a hat for $28 and supplies for $19. Is it reasonable to have $83 left?
Round the costs: $28 ≈ $30 and $19 ≈ $20.
Your estimated spending is $30 + $20 = $50, so you should have about $50 left.
That means $83 is not reasonable.
Your goal: Read carefully, estimate each step, and decide whether the answer makes sense!
