A scaled picture graph (also called a pictograph) uses pictures/icons to represent data, and each picture stands for more than 1 (thatโ€™s the โ€œscaleโ€).

What it looks like

Example key (scale):
โญ = 5 votes

If Pizza has 20 votes, you draw 4 stars (because 20 รท 5 = 4).

Steps to create a scaled picture graph

  1. List your categories (pizza, tacos, etc.).

  2. Write the data number for each category.

  3. Choose a scale (key) that makes the pictures easy to count (2, 5, 10, 25, etc.).

  4. Divide each data value by the scale to find how many pictures to draw.

  5. If the division doesnโ€™t come out even, use a half picture (or another fraction) and show it in the key.

Example 1

(easy, no halves)

Data: Favorite Snacks

  • Chips = 10

  • Cookies = 15

  • Fruit = 5

Key: ๐Ÿช = 5 students

Graph:

  • Chips: ๐Ÿช๐Ÿช

  • Cookies: ๐Ÿช๐Ÿช๐Ÿช

  • Fruit: ๐Ÿช

Example 2 (with halves)

Data: Books read

  • Mia = 6

  • Leo = 9

  • Sam = 3

Key: ๐Ÿ“˜ = 3 books
(So ยฝ๐Ÿ“˜ = 1.5 books)

Graph:

  • Mia (6): ๐Ÿ“˜๐Ÿ“˜

  • Leo (9): ๐Ÿ“˜๐Ÿ“˜๐Ÿ“˜

  • Sam (3): ๐Ÿ“˜

If you had 4.5 books, youโ€™d draw ๐Ÿ“˜ + ยฝ๐Ÿ“˜.
